What is a VIN?
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers that is used to identify your specific vehicle. No two vehicles have the exact same VIN, making it the easiest way to track and look up details about a specific car, truck, or SUV. You can actually learn a lot about the vehicle just by the sections of the VIN. For example, the first number or letter in your Toyota’s VIN tells you the country it was assembled in. The middle digits are code for the body style, engine type, airbag, vehicle series, and model line. Ending the VIN is a digit code for the model year, a plant code digit, and serial numbers.

When Do I Need the VIN?
There are many circumstances where having the VIN for your vehicle can come in handy. You’ll need it to register for a Toyota Owner’s account so that you can see the correct Owner’s Manual, maintenance timeline, and other details for your specific vehicle. If you want to check on any open recall for your Toyota, inputting the VIN ensures that we run a report and we are able to do a thorough check, since some recalls only affect certain years, engines, or trim levels. Another time it helps to have the VIN is when you are valuing your vehicle to trade or sell. With VIN an online trade-in tool can more accurately check the current market value and provide a quick appraisal estimate. Lastly, you can often use the VIN when searching for parts to repair or replace on your Toyota.

Locating the VIN
Now it’s time to locate the VIN. The good news is that it’s easy to find and you have several different places to look. Head out to your vehicle and look for a metal plate on the driver’s side corner of the windshield. If it’s difficult to read or you don’t see it there, you can also open the driver’s side door jam and check for a certification label with the VIN. Select vehicles also have it under the front passenger seat. If your vehicle is in the shop or you aren’t able to access it right now, you can also find the VIN on the title and insurance documents. As long as your vehicle was made after 1980 the 17-digit VIN should be easy to find but feel free to contact us if you are having trouble.
