Dashboard Warning Lights
There are many different warning lights that can appear on your dashboard and we understand that most drivers haven’t memorized them all. It’s also important to note that each year and model can have slightly different symbols, so a good place to start is by checking the Owner’s Manual or selecting your vehicle from the dropdown on Toyota’s website for owners. The warning lights can also have varying degrees of urgency. Some are for notification such as the AWD Lock Indicator, some are warnings that you should schedule a service appointment soon, and others are there to let you know that the vehicle may be dangerous to drive. If you aren’t sure or can’t find information about the light or symbol you are currently seeing, please call our Service Department and our knowledgeable team will be happy to assist.
Common Causes
The good news is that in most cases the passenger airbag light is simply an indication of the status of the front passenger airbag system. For most modern Toyota vehicles in the U.S.A you’ll see two columns of words. The left column will show “AIRBAG OFF” and the right “AIRBAG ON” with “passenger” written underneath. Depending on whether “ON” or “OFF” is illuminated lets you know the current status of the front airbag. In most cases the default is to have the front airbag on, but there may be a situation where the driver has manually opted to deactivate it. If you did not manually deactivate the airbag and the light is showing “OFF” there are a few possible causes, including having a shopping bag or purse sitting on the seat. If the bag is heavy enough to trigger the system but not enough to be sensed as safe for the airbag to be deployed, it may automatically turn off.
Potential Problems
If you have an adult sitting in the front seat and the passenger airbag light is still showing “OFF” there could be an issue with the system. Make sure they are sitting correctly and that the seatbelt is buckled. You can also try turning the engine off and on again to see if that corrects the light. If none of these fix the problem, we recommend bringing your Toyota to our Service Department. Our mechanics can inspect the sensor system as well as the interior electrical components to see what is causing the error.
